Last Sunday i had the pleasure of leading some musical worship at the Collide event hosted by Small Boat Big Sea in Manly. Collide is an event that seeks to answer the question “what is church supposed to be doing in the space between. The space between the world of here and now and the world yet to come.” In the weeks leading up to this event I asked myself many questions as to what the musical worship might look like for this group…. i just felt singing the usual pop church hits was not going to cut it. After much searching around i finally settled on 4 songs that i felt summed up what the event was trying to achieve.
The Songs we did were:
Already here by Aaron Niequist – This song was an anti “invocation” song…. a song that said we dont need to invite God to be here… becouse he is ALREADY here.
Blessed Be Your Name by Matt Redman – Basically the theme of this song is; if times are good… praise the Lord and if times are shit…. praise the Lord. This is all about a missional spirituality, when you are out there living amongst not-yet-christians you don’t always have that affirmation that “its ok” but no matter how we feel we need to praise the Lord.
Love Can Change the World by Aaron Niequist – Ok its going to be an Aaron fest… This is the first song of his that i used in sung worship, and i just love it!!! it is a protest song saying that the power of this world in military might, in intellectual thought and in financial systems is nothing next to the power of Love! it is hopelessly hopeful
Enchanted by Aaron Niequist – This song stood out to me because it is all about prevenient grace, the fact that God goes before us… that “surely he was in this place and i did not recognise it”
A big thanks to Mark Sayers as well who flew up from Melbourne to share about the Vertical self, i know i was challenged to think about how often i seek my identity from the people around me rather than my identity in Jesus.
The next Collide event will be 6-Jun with Danielle Strickland I hope to see you there….
Update: Mark’s talk from the night is here… its worth the listen.
